Few places in the world defy description; hidden deep within the untouched wilderness of southern Utah, Amangiri is one of them. The luxury resort tucked deep in red rock country isn’t just an excellent destination for hosting celebrations; it is an extraordinary experience full of adventure and connection that truly transforms them.
For one family, this secluded destination became the setting for a 50th birthday party and a gathering that brought together generations. Grandparents, parents, children, and lifelong friends were all welcomed by EXP Guides into the beauty of the American Southwest, ready to mark the special occasion.

The journey began before the arrival, winding through quiet desert roads flanked by towering rock formations. The sheer scale of the lunar-like landscape stretched out for miles in every direction, from craggy cliffs and endless dunes to sculpted rocks. It was the perfect prelude to what lay ahead – the following days spent in nature’s most spectacular playground. Arriving at Amangiri, the group was introduced to an expertly camouflaged yet contemporary structure designed to complement rather than compete with the surroundings.
The EXP Guides then ushered them into Camp Sarika, where they would have exclusive use of Amangiri’s intimate retreat. With one and two bedroom options available, these canvas-topped luxurious pavilions featured a private plunge pool, ultimate privacy, and immersion into the wilderness for the entire group.
As the sun set, the group gathered at the communal outdoor terrace, where EXP Guides sparked their excitement for what was to come. The first taste of dining here satisfied the growing anticipation, accompanied by a highlight of the evening: a private Navajo performance of traditional hoop dance, welcoming them into the land’s ancient spirit.

Surrounded by miles of wilderness, plenty was on the agenda, thanks to EXP’s curated excursions with local partners. Located near three national parks and within one of the world’s most striking geological landscapes, the first day began on the iconic Lake Powell. A private boat unlocked access and led them deep into the Colorado River’s most secluded canyons.
The morning started at Labyrinth Canyon with a guided hike to reach the ultimate thrill of the day: rappelling deep into the canyon’s heart. After building up a well-earned appetite, the group stopped for a chef-prepared lakeside lunch. The remainder of the afternoon unfolded at their own pace – paddleboarding across the lake and swimming. Full of energy, the children wasted no time and jumped on the Jet Skis for their next adrenaline fix.
Back at Camp Sarika, the group had time to unwind before dinner, taking full advantage of the exceptional amenities at both Sarika and Amangiri. A highlight was the heated pool at Amangiri, wrapped around a sandstone rock, which naturally has become the heart of the resort. Sundowners were later enjoyed before the group retired to Sarika’s private dining room for another wilderness-inspired feast.

The following day introduced another layer of wild adventure with a guided off-road excursion into Vermilion Cliffs, exploring in a convoy of UTVs. Unlike anywhere else, this expanse is often likened to a miniature Grand Canyon. The group ventured to the Paria Overlook, where the landscape displays limestone cliffs and canyons for miles. Along the way, they spotted antelopes and coyotes in the distance while the elusive California condors soared above. At the viewpoint, some of the group headed off the beaten path and explored with mountain bikes. For the afternoon’s activity, the whole group set off on a horseback ride from Amangiri, gaining yet another perspective of the impressive desert scenery.
After experiencing the rugged lands, the jam-packed day ended at Amangiri, where the adults found relaxation and enjoyed the power of nature at the Aman Spa. Inspired by Navajo healing traditions, the spa offers a profoundly grounding experience. Some indulged in the signature massages, while others found peace in a sound bowl ceremony. After dinner, the new moon provided the perfect stargazing conditions. Experts from the Lowell Observatory arrived equipped with multiple telescopes and gave a guided session pointing out the major constellations.

The much anticipated birthday celebration followed, marking the mother’s 50th. As requested, the day began with a private sunrise yoga session in the yoga pavilion, surrounded by the quiet energy of the desert. After indulging in a decadent breakfast of buttermilk pancakes, the group set off for the river, embarking on a motorized pontoon raft for a scenic journey downstream. They were treated to views of Marble Canyon and Horseshoe Bend while the captain shared stories about these wonders. The adventure continued with a transfer to Marble Canyon Airport, where three helicopters awaited and whisked the group away to the grand finale of the trip: Tower Butte.
The group landed on the solitary and striking tower, which rises 5,000 feet above sea level, and soaked in the 360-degree sweeping views of the Canyons of Lake Powell, Navajo Mountain, and LeChee Roc. This stone skyscraper is a sacred landmark for the Navajo people, and the area has been a historic crossing for Native Americans for many generations.
After plenty of photographic opportunities, the group enjoyed a private lunch set up, not forgetting the slices of delicious birthday cake that topped it off. The adventure continued back in the helicopters with an extended aerial tour of the unique landscapes that unfolded below, watching as the afternoon light bounced off the desert features.

Back at Camp Sarika, birthday gifts were exchanged, and golden hour was once again enjoyed, with the pink and purple hues fading into the group’s final evening of celebration. A memorable dinner followed, and for dessert, the group savored s’mores by the firepits. As they relaxed under the stars, a local guitarist serenaded them with birthday songs into the night.
Waking up for a final morning, while not wanting to leave, the group enjoyed a final breakfast, reflecting on their adventure. This 50th birthday wasn’t just another annual celebration; it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that would be talked about for years to come.
